Dorothy's Ruby Slippers Need Your Help To Stay In The Smithsonian

A Kickstarter has been launched to help preserve the celebrated shoes.

It's going to take more than clicking your heels together three times to keep the iconic ruby slippers from The Wizard of Oz at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History.

Dorothy's legendary shoes have been one of the museum's most popular exhibits since they first went on display back in 1979, but they are starting to fray and discolor with age.

To remedy the problem, the Smithsonian has launched a Kickstarter campaign, titled #KeepThemRuby, to raise $300,000 for repair, cleaning and conservation of the famous footwear.

"The materials are incredibly sensitive," said conservator Dawn Wallace. "If we’re not able to limit a lot of the deterioration issues that are going on currently, it could really shorten their lifespan."

The Smithsonian has held successful crowdsourcing campaigns before, raising more than $719,000 to renovate NASA space suits worn by Neil Armstrong and Alan Shepard.
