Netflix Cancels RuPaul Series "AJ and the Queen"

It's the end of the road for Ruby Red.

Put the RV in park because Ruby's road trip is over.

Netflix has canceled AJ and the Queen, the original series starring RuPaul, who also co-created the series with Michael Patrick King. Ru made the announcement on Twitter today, saying it was the "end of the road" for the show: "Netflix has decided to not extend our road trip across America."

The 10-episode hourlong comedy starred the Emmy-winning Drag Race host as Ruby Red, “a bigger-than-life but down-on-her-luck drag queen who travels across America from club to club in a rundown 1990s RV with her unlikely sidekick AJ, a recently orphaned, tough-talking, scrappy 11-year-old stowaway,” according to an official synopsis.

“As these two misfits, one tall, one small, travel from city to city, Ruby’s message of love and acceptance winds up touching people and changing their lives for the better. Oh, and RuPaul performs a killer musical number in every drag club.”

The first season ended on a cliffhanger, with AJ—SPOILER ALERT—being reunited with her mother. When Ru and King spoke with NewNowNext about their creative process, the duo was already looking ahead to where they could take the characters in upcoming seasons.

AJ AND THE QUEEN

"We began our creative process, which is thinking 'What’s next? What haven’t you seen? What could happen? What’s unpredictable? What’s new,' King said. "So we’re thinking a lot about the complicated triangle we created at the very end between Ruby/Robert, AJ, and Brianna. It’s a very interesting knot we’ve tied, and there are lots of ways we can untie it or make it tighter."

Guess we won't be getting that Latrice Royale spin-off. But maybe we can hope for a wrap-up movie à la Sense8 to give us some closure?
