Trailblazer RuPaul Inducted Into California Hall of Fame

"I am so proud to be a part of that legacy."

Eureka! The Golden State just got a little brighter.

RuPaul, who received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame last year, was inducted this week into the California Hall of Fame. The Emmy-winning RuPaul's Drag Race host is the first drag queen to receive the honor.

The California Hall of Fame, established in 2006 by the California Museum and the state's former First Lady Maria Shriver, recognizes "legendary people who embody California’s innovative spirit and have made their mark on history," according to an official description.

Gov. Gavin Newsom and First Partner Jennifer Siebel Newsom presented "Spirit of California" medals to the 10 inductees of the California Hall of Fame's 13th annual class at the California Museum in Sacramento.

“There is perhaps no one person that has done more to dismantle the limiting ‘man box’ we put our boys and men into than RuPaul,” Mrs. Newsom said in her introduction. “And he’s been doing it with aplomb, living authentically out loud since he was a young boy.”

“He has achieved success in every medium he has attempted," she continued, noting that the icon has released 15 studio albums, published three books, and appeared in more than 50 films and TV shows. She also praised Drag Race for “its joyfulness, inclusivity, and celebration all of humanity.”

“RuPaul has simply made American media and our larger culture a more inclusive place, and he has done it with incomparable fabulousness. He has transformed hearts and minds, and he has saved lives too, with countless young people finally seeing themselves reflected in their media, grateful for the community where they too can feel at home.”

In his acceptance speech, RuPaul, who was born and raised in San Diego, explained how his parents moved from Louisiana to California in the 1950s as part of the Great Migration, during which many black people left the South.

"California has this incredible spirit to it, of frontiersmen, of trailblazers," Ru said, accompanied at the event by husband Georges LeBar. "People who aren’t afraid to take on a challenge. And I am so proud to be a part of that legacy, and to take that ingenuity and spirit with me, and carry that torch around the world, wherever I go."

This year's California Hall of Fame inductees also included Dr. Maya Angelou, Tony Hawk, George Lopez, and Wolfgang Puck.

2020 is shaping up to be another busy year for RuPaul. RuPaul’s Drag Race has been renewed for a 12th season on VH1, and he will also host RuPaul’s Celebrity Drag Race and a second season of RuPaul’s Drag Race U.K., not to mention the Las Vegas residency RuPaul’s Drag Race Live!

His many other upcoming projects include the new Netflix series AJ and the Queen, which premieres January 10 on Netflix.
