“RuPaul’s Drag Race” Winning Streak Continues at 72nd Primetime Emmys

Snatching trophies!

Winner, winner, lots of chicken dinner.

After snatching five trophies at last week's Creative Arts Emmys, RuPaul’s Drag Race won the grand prize, Outstanding Competition Program, at the 72nd Primetime Emmy Awards this past Sunday, September 20.

After being surprised by an Emmy statue popping out of a box, Mama Ru accepted the award remotely by thanking the Television Academy for "the beautiful honor."

"We love making television. It is an honor to make television, and all the kids get to tell their stories on our show and it's beautiful," Ru said in his acceptance speech. "A special thank you to the viewers and a special note to the viewer: Kiddo, I know how you feel right now. Just know that you are loved and don't give up on love. Believe in love and the power of love, okay?"

After his speech, the ceremony cut to a quick shot of Jaida Essence Hall, Heidi N Closet, and Widow Von'Du—three queens from the most recent season of Drag Race—cheering Ru on. This marks the third year in a row that RuPaul’s Drag Race has won Outstanding Competition Program.

During this year's Creative Arts Emmys, Ru took home the award for Outstanding Host for a Reality or Competition Program. The reality series also won for Outstanding Casting, Directing, Costumes, Editing, Hairstyles, and Makeup, which marked the first win for Raven, a former Drag Race contestant who is now Ru’s personal makeup artist on the show.

The series took home a total of six Emmys, its biggest haul yet in a single year.
