Russian Law Now Bans People With "Disorders Of Sexual Preference" From Driving

A Russian decree signed by Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev late last month will effectively ban people with "disorders of sexual preference, including transgender people, sadomasochists and exhibitionists, from driving.

The document, which implements a law titled "On Road Safety," relies on the World Health Organization's list of classified illnesses to disqualify otherwise able citizens from obtaining a driver's license.

According to BuzzFeed, the document lists health "contradictions" that would hinder a person from being able to operate a vehicle. Along with blindness and epilepsy, it includes "mental and behavioral disorders" including "gender identity disorders," "transsexualism" and "dual-role transvestism," and "disorders of sexual preference" including "sadomasochism," pedophilia" and "exhibitionism."

Though the document doesn't explicitly ban gay and lesbian citizens from obtaining a driver's license, it wouldn't be surprising if the law is enforced to include all LGBTs, given the country's horrific treatment of its LGBT citizens.
