Russian Town Starts Petition To Remove "Gay" Dolphin Statue From Public Garden

City officials even launched a poll to ask residents if they think the statue is appropriate.

Some residents in the Russian city of Bryansk are concerned about a new statue of two kissing dolphins, installed in a local garden earlier this week, because they believe it is "gay" and represents "questionable cultural values."

A petition demanding the dolphin statue's removal was started by the Bryansk center for youth initiatives a day after it was erected.

According to the Change.org petition, which currently has 485 supporters, locals were "shocked by the bad taste" of the sculpture and fear it represents some kind of sinister agenda.

"We consider it necessary in the shortest possible time to dismantle the concrete dolphins and move them out of the city center to the outskirts," the petition reads in part.

According to Buzzfeed, the concern prompted officials to open a poll on the city's website to ask residents if they believed the statue is appropriate. Turns out the pro-dolphin crowd slaughtered the anti-dolphin crowd in that poll, so the city closed it and claimed the system was somehow hacked or manipulated.

On Twitter, people on both sides of the argument had pretty strong opinions.

Buzzfeed translates:

"Those dolphins on the Bryansk embankment are violating a law that prohibits gay propaganda, some locals say."

"Whether gays or lesbians, those dolphins definitely are a propaganda of something."

"Just read the news about dolphin monument at the embankment. Some shit heads see gay propaganda in it."

According to locals, the situation has become so tense that police are reportedly guarding the statue.

Thank god nobody installed a giant butt plug in the center of town. The world would have imploded.
