Ruth Bader Ginsburg Absent During Oral Arguments for Second Day in a Row
Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg is absent for the second day in a row as the court hears oral arguments.
Ginsburg is recovering from surgery earlier this month to remove cancerous nodules from her lung, discovered when she fell and broke her ribs. She has survived cancer in the past, and this is the first time she has had to miss oral arguments.
Chief Justice John Roberts announced she was unable to attend on Tuesday morning, after noting yesterday that she would participate in the cases by reading transcripts, CNN reports. Doctors believe they were successful in removing all of the cancer.
The high court is preparing to hear a number of petition that would impact the LGBTQ community, including the Trump administration's request to fast-track a ruling on its transgender military ban, which it argues is not a actually a transgender military ban.
Additionally, three petitions seek clarification on whether Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which bars employment discrimination on the basis of sex, applies to discrimination against LGBTQ people in the workplace.
