"Big Gay Kiss-In" Staged At UK Supermarket After Guard Tells Couple To Stop Holding Hands

"We do our best to make sure everyone feels welcome in our stores," said a Sainsbury's spokesman, "but occasionally we make mistakes."

After a security guard at a Sainsbury's supermarket in London told a gay couple they were "touching inappropriately" by holding hands, demonstrators held a kiss-in in the store's aisles.

Boyfriends Thomas Rees, 32, and Joshua Bradwell, 25, were chastised on Monday after another customer reportedly complained about their mild PDA.

On Saturday evening, some 200 people danced to Donna Summers songs outside the Sainsbury's on Hackney Road before going inside and engaging in some same-sex kissing.

"When someone questions your behavior in such a direct manner you can't help but analyze how you are perceived by society," said Rees. "Both of us have received messages from people around the world who don't even have the courage to hold hands, let alone stand up against something like this. You have to do so."

For it's part, the store seemed to support the demonstration: A spokesperson, handing out cookies and water, said the event "is an important opportunity for the community to show their support."

"We do our best to make sure everyone feels welcome in our stores but occasionally we make mistakes. We are working hard to make sure lessons are learnt."
