Salt Lake City Finalizing Plan To Name Street In Honor Of Gay Civil Rights Leader Harvey Milk

“He is our Martin Luther King Jr.”

Harvey Milk, the first openly gay person to be elected to public office in California, may be getting a street named in his honor in Salt Lake City via a new initiative courtesy of Equality Utah.

“We’ve had so many tremendous victories this year alone, and I think Harvey really set the tone for the LGBT movement — how to be successful and organize us politically,” said Troy Williams, executive director of Equality Utah, who first sat down with Utah Mayor Ralph Becker over a year ago to discuss the idea.

According to City Councilman Stan Penfold, the first openly gay council member, the plan could be presented before the City Council before the end of the calendar year.

“My hope is that we can send a message as a city that we acknowledge that kind of movement,” Penfold told KRON-TV, adding, "they are still working on what part of the street will bear Milk’s name."

The news is particularly timely coming off of yesterday's National Coming Out Day. Milk famously pleaded with closeted gay men to come out as a way to increase public visibility of the LGBT community and help make policy changes.

In 1978, Harvey offered his passionate plea:

Gay brothers and sisters, you must come out. Come out to your parents. I know that it is hard and will hurt them, but think about how they will hurt you in the voting booth! Come out to your relatives.

Come out to your friends, if indeed they are your friends. Come out to your neighbors, to your fellow workers, to the people who work where you eat and shop. Come out only to the people you know, and who know you, not to anyone else.

But once and for all, break down the myths. Destroy the lies and distortions. For your sake. For their sake.

“Harvey is a true icon for the LGBT community. He set the standard for coalition building and collaborative leadership,” Williams said. “He is our Martin Luther King Jr.”
