Salt Lake City Votes Unanimously To Honor Harvey Milk With Street Name

Bravo, Salt Lake!

The Salt Lake City council voted unanimously Tuesday night in favor of incorporating LGBT history in the city's framework by renaming a street after gay rights icon Harvey Milk, the former San Francisco Supervisor who was murdered in 1978 for being openly gay.

The council announced the honor would go to 900 South, just nine blocks from the world headquarters of the deeply conservative Mormon church, last night on Twitter.

Soon, the strip of road will be called Harvey Milk Blvd.:

The decision came after an hour of discussion between council members and Equality Utah advocates who spearheaded the initiative in October. According to Fox 13, supporters argued that "Harvey Milk inspired the modern LGBT rights movement and continues to inspire people."

"People look to him as a symbol of activism, of getting involved, of being engaged," said Councilman Stan Penfold, one of two openly gay council members under the city's first openly gay mayor, Jackie Biskupski. "I’m amazed at how familiar people seem to be with him."

He added: "There are a lot of perceptions of what Salt Lake City is and is not. I felt it was really important that we send a message that we are an open and inclusive city."
