Sam Smith Doesn't Want To Be A Gay Spokesperson

Though he's recently been thrust into the spotlight, out British soul singer Sam Smith isn't ready to be an LGBT spokesperson.

Smith unofficially came out in his video for "Leave Your Lover," before confirming that he was indeed gay and that his debut album — In the Lonely Hour — was about his unrequited love for a (straight) guy. In a recent interview with Digital Spy, Smith discussed his success in light of coming out.

Smith admits that he was worried about coming out because "equality is so far from where it should be," but he was pleasantly surprised by the reaction he got, or didn't get: "I didn't give the public enough credit. We were really panicky about it, but then as soon as we did it, I am just so proud of how people haven't reacted. People really just don't give a s**t.

Digital Spy notes that his music has "completely transcended the revelation," which Smith accredits to his focus on his music and not his sexuality.

“It's because I'm not trying to be a spokesperson,” the 22-year-old crooner explained. “It sounds awful of me, but I'm really just trying to live my life and write music about it. That's what I do. I'm not trying to heal the world. From a young age I've always been like this, so it's been normal. My family and friends have made it feel normal and I'm not going to stop that now."
