Sam Smith’s New Donna Summer Cover Is a Queer Disco Dream

"Highest song I've ever f*cking sang."

We were never the same again after that Summer…

Sam Smith has released “I Feel Love,” a reimagining of Donna Summer’s disco classic.

Produced by Disclosure’s Guy Lawrence, Smith’s falsetto-forward cover will also be featured in Target’s 2019 holiday campaigns.

“I Feel Love,” which was first produced by Giorgio Moroder in 1977, appeared on Summer’s fifth studio album, I Remember Yesterday.

“As a queer person,” Smith writes on social media, “’I Feel Love’ has followed me to every dance floor in every queer space from the minute I started clubbing. This song to me is an anthem of our community and it was an honour and most importantly so much fun to have a go at it… Highest song I’ve ever fucking sang. But a joy.”

“It was the hardest thing I’ve ever sang in my life,” Smith told Zane Lowe on Apple’s Beats 1. “It actually wasn’t fun to sing… it was quite painful. But the outcome was good.”

Smith, who had previously come out as nonbinary and genderqueer, announced in September that they prefer to be addressed with gender-neutral pronouns: “I’ve decided I am changing my pronouns to THEY/THEM… after a lifetime of being at war with my gender I’ve decided to embrace myself for who I am, inside and out.”

The 27-year-old British singer-songwriter revealed on social media last month that they are currently working on their third studio album.

Smith released their last single, “How Do You Sleep?,” in July. Directed by Grant Singer with choreography by Parris Goebel, the video shows Smith unleashing their “inner dancing queen” alongside shirtless male dancers.

“I felt quite restricted by my performance for many years, actually,” the Grammy winner confessed in behind-the-scenes footage. “I think recently with coming to terms with my sexuality even more than I ever have and my gender more than I have, I think I felt this freedom to start moving in a way that’s just more confident.”

Smith also teamed up with Judy star Renée Zellweger to record “Get Happy,” one of Judy Garland’s most beloved songs, for the new biopic’s soundtrack.
