Sam Smith: I Had "Reservations" About Coming Out

Sam Smith says he wasn't so sure he wanted to be an out pop star.

"I came out as a gay man at a very, very young age," the "Stay With Me" singer told the Telegraph. But doing so in public, as In the Lonely Hour climbed the charts, left him with major trepidation.

"We all had that reservation before the record," he said. "Past gay artists, things have happened to them that haven’t been great. All I can say is I’m so unbelievably surprised and happy at how far the world has come, because there have been no issues."

Smith officially came out in May to Fader magazine, revealing that Lonely Hour was inspired by his unrequited love for a straight male friend. While he still wants to find love, he said that the support rom fans has sustained him.

"Obviously I want to fall in love and stuff, but I don’t yearn for it every day like I used to," he said. "It sounds so cheesy but my fans have completely filled that hole."

Oh, too easy.
