Although Sam Smith kept his lips to himself, unlike host Gal Gadot, he put them to good use last night as the musical guest on Saturday Night Live.
As expected, Smith sang the hit ballad “Too Good at Goodbyes,” his first single since the Oscar-winning 2015 Bond theme “Writing’s on the Wall.”
Backed by a soulful choir, he later performed his newest single, “Pray,” which the 25-year-old singer-songwriter says was inspired by a trip to Iraq he took last year with the charity War Child.
“The song is about me and about a relationship that I was in,” Smith recently told Beats 1 about “Too Good at Goodbyes,” which has an LGBT-inclusive music video. “I think I’m even more single than I was when I released In the Lonely Hour… I’m insanely single.”
Three years since his Grammy-winning debut, Smith’s sophomore album, The Thrill of It All, is scheduled to drop November 3. His North American arena tour kicks off June 18.
