Sam Smith Thanked The Man Who Broke His Heart For Big Grammy Win

Sam Smith was the man of the night at Sunday's Grammy Awards: The 23-yar-old Brit took home four awards, including for Best Pop Vocal Album, Best New Artist and Record of the Year.

And he has heartbreak to thank for it.

Smith has revealed in interviews that In the Lonely Hour was inspired by his unrequited love for a straight friend, and as he accepted his award, he tipped his hat to the unnamed friend.

"I want to thank the man who this record is about—who I fell in love with," said the "Stay with Me" singer. "Thank you so much. You broke my heart and now I've got four Grammys."

Smith also admitted that before he hit it big, he tried everything to become the kind of singer he thought people wanted him to be.

"I tried to lose weight, and I made awful music," he recalls. "It was only until I started being myself and the music started to flow that people started to listen."
