Same-Sex Scots Tie The Knot As Marriage Equality Arrives In Scotland

— Humanist Society (@humanistsociety) December 30, 2014

The first same-sex couples were married in Scotland today as the country's new marriage equality law, passed in February, finally went into effect.

Among the first to tie the knot were Joe Schofield and Malcolm Brown, who were wed at a humanist ceremony at the Trades Hall in Glasgow. "This is an amazing chapter in Scotland's history which we are all witnessing and can be proud of," the two told The BBC. "Scotland is leading the way in fairness and equality for all, and we would like to thank all those who campaigned so tirelessly for this change."

The couple was wed at 00:01 on Hogmanay, the day before New Year's, after waiting a 15-day notice period required of all marriages in the country.

Also among the first to be married on Hogmanay were Susan and Gerrie Douglas-Scott, a Glasgow couple with five grown children who've been in a civil partnership since 2006.

"We are delighted that, at long last, after 18 years together, our love finally has the same recognition in law and society as all other married couples," they said. "2014 has been quite a year."

Congrats to all the happy couples!
