San Diego Drag Queen Assaulted Outside Gay Bar As Patrons Sit And Watch

"You would think that in your community people would take care of each other."

San Diego drag performer Kickxy Vixen-Styles remains shaken this week after a man allegedly assaulted her early Sunday morning in the parking lot outside Rich's, the Hillcrest gay bar where she works the door on weekend nights.

Vixen-Styles wrote in a Facebook post that her assailant was a man who'd tried to sneak into the bar earlier Saturday night for the weekly "Euphoria" show, but was escorted outside by security.

She said she'd all but forgotten about the unruly patron by the time her shift ended and she left around 3:30am, and was surprised to see him in the parking lot again as she was walking to her car.

"I'm done for the night and I'm walking to my car when all of a sudden he's behind me and I try to get in my car but it was too late he grabs my door open, and at that point I'm stuck between my door and him slamming it against me and trying to break my window," Vixen-Styles told San Diego Gay & Lesbian News.

Worst of all, the queen said a group of patrons who were standing nearby watched the attack and failed to do anything at all to help.

"A group of four trans girl(s) just sat across the street watching instead of getting help," she wrote. "You would think that in your community people would take care of each other. I know that if I were to see something like that I would intervene and get help. Please be safe out there and take care of each other."

Vixen-Styles said one bystander alerted bar staff who eventually "handled" the man, and even though she didn't suffer any physical injuries from the altercation, she's still rattled by the experience.

"I just felt so helpless and in a way just let down by the people around," she said.

Similar attacks have become somewhat regular in the Hillcrest neighborhood, SDGLN claims.

According to the paper, LGBT people have been victim to a few attacks within the last year, including one man who was beaten unconscious while walking home from a bar, and another who was stabbed five times after trying to break up a fight at nearby bar The Eagle.

It's unclear what happened to the man who allegedly assaulted Vixen-Styles or what bar security staff did with him after "handling" him. No police report was filed because the police were not called.
