During an appearance on last night’s Watch What Happens Live, guest Sandra Bernhard was true to her outspoken self, revealing that she is not a fan of Caitlyn Jenner.
In honor of her new Radio Andy show “Sandyland” on Sirius XM, host Cohen asked Bernhard to sound off on some hot topics.
“I think it’s the best thing that ever happened to the Republican Party,” Bernhard replied when asked for her thoughts on Donald Trump.
As for today’s Popepacalypse: “If they would only get real and let women have birth control and let gay people get married, I think it would be fantastic.”
As expected, Bernhard did not hold back when Cohen asked if she was team Caitlyn Jenner.
“Honey,” Bernhard responded, shaking her head. “Bruce Jenner was a sexist, golf playing bore. Suddenly he becomes a woman and everybody’s like ’Oh he’s so like moving and so emotional.’ It’s like ’no, sorry, no.'”
She then began wagging her finger adding, “You have to earn your right to be a woman.”
We asked trans writer/activist Mey Rude to weigh in:
Bernhard is definitely not the one who gets to decide who is and who isn’t a woman. Perhaps if she had previously said similar things about cis women, something like ’Ann Coulter is racist, misogynistic and obtuse, I’m sorry, no, you have to earn your right to be a woman,’ than this would seem less transphobic.
But instead, she’s just trafficking in old transmisogynistic rhetoric that says trans women are really just men who want to dress up like women and gain access to women’s spaces. And she’s just emphasizing her stuck-in-the-past and ignorant beliefs by misgendering Caitlyn Jenner and refusing to use her real name.
No matter what Sandra Bernhard says, Caitlyn Jenner is a woman and deserves to be respected as one. I’m not saying we need to respect her opinions on political issues, social issues, LGBTQ issues or golf, but saying Jenner is anything other than the woman that she is only reveals that you’re stuck in the past, full of hate or ignorant (whether willfully or not), and I doubt that Bernhard wants to be known as any of those things.
