Sarah Hyland Confirms Her "Modern Family" Character Is Bisexual

Haley Dunphy could be dating women soon.

According to Modern Family star Sarah Hyland, her character, Haley Dunphy, is bisexual.

A fan on twitter asked the actress about her character's sexuality and while Hyland said she couldn't speak for the writers, she could confirm that Hayley is, in fact, bisexual.

Haley has so far only dated men on the hit ABC comedy, but that could change. (Haley's teased younger sister Alex was a lesbian because of her choice in sensible footwear.)

Outside of the show's major gay couple, Mitchell and Cameron, Modern Family has also had recurring gay characters including Pepper Saltzman (Nathan Lane), Ronaldo (Christian Barillas), Longines (Kevin Daniels), Pam (Wendi McLendon-Covey), Crispin (Craig Zimmerman), and Steven and Stefan (Rodrigo Rojas and Colin Hanlon).

Haley would be the show's first bi character, though, and one of few out bisexual characters on a primetime comedy.

It would't be Hyland's first queer role, though: She shared a same-sex kiss with a friend in the movie Date and Switch.

Reid Ewing, who played Haley's boyfriend, Dylan, came out as gay in a 2015 HuffPo essay discussing his battle with body dysmorphia.
