Meet the Logo30: Sarah Kate Ellis

The GLAAD president and CEO offers a message of hope to the LGBTQ community.

Every day during the month of June, we will be spotlighting our 2020 Logo30. This powerful series profiles ordinary and extraordinary people who show pride in unique and provocative ways. Visit the Logo30 homepage to view current and past honorees.

If you know GLAAD, then you should get to know Sarah Kate Ellis, the advocacy group’s president and CEO.

Ellis joined the organization in 2014. Putting her background as a media executive to good use, the out activist refocused GLAAD’s strategy for ensuring LGBTQ representation in media to include effective campaigns, reports, and programs. She commissioned the group’s annual “Accelerating Acceptance” index, which examines how Americans feel about queer people and pro-LGBTQ policies.

Speaking to Logo and NewNowNext, Ellis offered a message of hope for LGBTQ Americans, especially queer youth forced to stay in unsafe environments amid the COVID-19 pandemic. As NewNowNext previously reported, social distancing and quarantining have taken a significant toll on the mental health of LGBTQ youth.

“We are here for you,” Ellis said. “As GLAAD, we are still fighting for you. And I know that it can be really hard sometimes… and even though you might be in a home that is unaccepting, that is not comfortable, know that we are here. This will end, and you will be with your community again. We love you, and we are fighting for you.”
