Sarah Silverman Explains How Republicans Can’t Win Without Cheating

Controversial new photo identification laws intended to combat nonexistent voter fraud have drawn criticism for the fact that they deliberately disenfranchise Democratic voting blocs.

In layman’s terms, if you’re black, poor, old, or a student, “lawmakers are trying to f*ck you in your a**holes,” says Sarah Silverman. To vote, many states require that voters present a valid government-issued ID, such as a driver’s license, but more than 21 million American do not possess such identification and requiring it at the ballot box may well be unconstitutional.

Say you live in Pennsylvania where voter ID laws require that you present a valid photo identification card to vote. A non-driver photo identification card costs $13.50, plus hours upon hours of your life spent waiting at the DMV. Requiring Pennsylvanians to purchase an ID card from a state agency in order to vote essentially constitutes a poll tax, which directly violates the 24th Amendment.

As Silverman puts it, “This attempt to prevent voter fraud is itself the only voter fraud taking place.”
