Sarah Silverman Is Officially “Done” Making Gay People a Punchline

"I f*ck up all the time."

Sarah Silverman, a longtime LGBTQ advocate who fought for marriage equality, says she will no longer tell gay jokes.

Silverman got dragged into the national conversation last week after Kevin Hart stepped down from hosting the 91st Academy Awards amid backlash surrounding his homophobic Twitter history.

Nick Cannon defended Hart by resurfacing old tweets from Silverman, Amy Schumer, and Chelsea Handler that he felt also used homophobic language.

Cannon specifically called out a tweet in which Silverman joked, “I don't mean this in a hateful way but the new bachelorette’s a faggot.”

Following Cannon's remarks, Silverman explained to a follower on Twitter that she had been using the anti-gay slur "comedically as an ally (liberal bubble bullshit, I know now)."

“I’m done with that," Silverman told TMZ Thursday night when asked about making future jokes that could be perceived as homophobic. "I think I can find other ways to be funny.”

“I used to say ‘gay’ all the time," Silverman continued. "'Oh, that’s so gay.' We’re from Boston. We’d go, 'That’s what we say in Boston. I have gay friends. I just say gay.' And then I heard myself and I realized I was like the guy who says, 'What? I say colored. I have colored friends,'" And I realized it was stupid, and I’m certainly creative enough to think of other words besides that, that don’t hurt people. But I fuck up all the time."

Would Silverman replace Hart as host of the Oscars? “I don’t think I’m the man for the job,” she said.

The Ralph Breaks the Internet star made similar comments earlier this month in an interview with the Guardian.

"Certainly stuff that I did 10 or 15 years ago, I cringe at now," she said of her problematic past material. "All I can do is learn from it, be changed forever by it, and do what I can to make it right going forward."

Hart repeatedly made anti-gay comments in a series of now-deleted tweets between 2009 and 2011, even threatening his son with violence if he caught him playing with dolls, and insulted various celebrities by calling them “gay” or “fag.”

“I sincerely apologize to the LGBTQ community for my insensitive words from my past,” Hart wrote last week on social media. “I am evolving and want to continue to do so.”

The 39-year-old entertainer initially failed to issue an apology, insisting he had addressed the situation “several times” already. On Instagram he told people to “stop looking for reasons to be angry,” claiming he would “stand his ground” and not “feed the internet trolls.”

A number of other comedians besides Cannon, including D.L. Hughley, have rushed to Hart's defense.

The Oscars will be held on February 24, 2019, but a replacement host has not yet been announced.
