Sasha Velour Opens Up About Painful Infection That Left Her Bedridden

"They weren’t able to do stitches because they removed so much."

Sasha Velour's iconic rose petal reveal was just spoofed on the latest episode of Saturday Night Live, but the RuPaul's Drag Race winner is now opening up about a darker phase of her life.

In a new interview with People, the Brooklyn-based goddess revealed that she had suffered a painful staph infection due to her shaving her body for her drag art.

“I’m used to having pain that I don’t understand because I’m in drag. So I didn’t think much of it. I let it go on for months before really looking into what it was,” Sasha said, recalling when she first noticed "deep and muscular pain in her backside."

But the pain became so intense that she couldn't get out of bed. "I couldn’t sit down, I could barely walk. I was in so much pain."

With the help of queer-friendly doctors in New York City, Sasha was diagnosed with a staph infection, which was caused in part by excessive shaving.

“They’re like, ‘Pretty much shaving your body is risky precisely because of this reason.’ The doctor pretty much said, ‘Get it waxed or get laser hair removal or be hairy,'” she added. “It was like a huge chunk of my butt and leg that they removed that had to grow back. They weren’t able to do stitches because they removed so much."

Sasha revealed she was bedridden and had to rely on the help of her partner, Johnny, but kept her illness a secret from her fans, feeling "ashamed" about the situation.

Now on the up-and-up, she will continue her Smoke & Mirrors one-woman show, which she's bringing to 23 cities across North America in the coming months. The rose petal princess is now determined to be a "hairier drag queen."

"Even though my chest hair wasn’t part of [the infection], that’s coming back into the picture too," she explained. "I’m just like, 'It’s all body hair all the time now.' And femme can look like anything, right? Might as well be natural and healthy."
