San Francisco Politician Taps Drag Queens For Catchy Re-Election Ad

Finally, an election to celebrate!

An openly gay San Francisco politician is using drag queens to help win a seat in the California Senate.

Scott Wiener, a 19-year resident of the Castro, currently serves as a San Francisco City Supervisor, an esteemed position once held by legendary gay rights activist Harvey Milk.

Wiener announced his Senate campaign earlier this summer and dropped the brand new ad, featuring local queens Carnie Asada, Au Jus, and Miz Palou, this week.

In it, the girls perform a parody of Katy Perry's "Firework" that sings the praises of the beloved politician.

They sing: "Do you know who works hard for me and you? He’s small and smart and true. Scott Wiener’s the one who fights, our champion, working day and night, for what he knows is right."

As the chorus kicks in, they belt: "Scott’s the one who’ll do the work, he’s always shown us what he’s worth. Scott for Senate, oh oh oh, our voice in Sacramento-oh-oh."

Through song, the queens promise that Wiener is dedicated to important issues including protecting rent control, the environment, public safety, housing, and affordable health care. A statement from his campaign said it highlights "the work Scott Wiener is doing to create a more affordable and livable community."

During Pride earlier this summer, Wiener penned a powerful address that honored Harvey Milk and reinforced his dream of making San Francisco a citywide safe haven for the LGBT community.

"There will never, ever be another Harvey, and we must remember what he stood for as we move forward as a community," he wrote.

“Together, we have fought and survived the worst days of the HIV epidemic. We have come out of the shadows and claimed a seat at the table, winning elected offices around the country and even a United States Senate seat. We no longer have to rely exclusively on allies to push our agenda for us. We now have the capacity to put our own community members in positions of power to get the job done."

He added: “Make no mistake, we face very real challenges ahead, but we are resilient and we get stronger with every setback. We will win in the end, whatever the challenge."
