Scottish Brewery Launches World's First "Transgender" Beer

No Labels beer has been brewed with hops that have changed sex from male to female.

Scottish craft brewery BrewDog is launching "the world's first non-binary transgender beer" this week, and some members of the LGBT community are not happy about it.

"No Label," the 4.6% ABV Kölsch, "has been brewed with hops that have changed sex from female to male flowers prior to harvest."

Brewdog, which plans to donate profits of the beer to LGBT organizations, said it used the flowers "to emphasize that, just like humans, beer can be whatever the hell it wants to be—and proud of it."

A spokesperson for Stonewall, which campaigns for LGBT equality across Britain, isn't thrilled.

"While it’s encouraging to see BrewDog raising money for trans youth communities, and we like the ‘No Label’ concept, we’re concerned about the language," the group said in a statement. "The trans community is diverse - many trans people do not transition, or identify with binary genders, and BrewDog’s language undermines that."

BrewDog's attempt to curry favor with the trans community comes after an ad campaign this fall appeared to mock trans and homeless people.

A YouTube video featured the company’s founders, James Watt and Martin Dickie, dressed as homeless people and trans sex workers, with the refrain “Don’t make us do this”.

In the clip, Watt and Dickie tell viewers that they will do "anything” to help promote fundraising efforts for the brewery, but ask not to be made to do certain things.
