The Senate Finally Revealed Its New Health Care Plan—And America Is PISSED

Dozens of disabled protestors were arrested outside Sen. Mitch McConnell's offices.

The Republican Party has been tearing into Obamacare since it was signed into law, and today the Senate introduced its version of an alternative—the inaptly named "Better Care Reconciliation Act" (BCRA).

As expected it's a Dumpster fire for women, the elderly, LGBT people and other at-risk groups. Much like the House version, the BCRA would dramatically slash Medicaid, pull back subsidies to the healthcare marketplace, cut taxes for the richest Americans, and—surprise!—defund Planned Parenthood.

Even some Republicans have been angry at the clandestine way Senate leadership drafted the legislation. Moderates in the party were all about repealing and replacing the Affordable Healthcare Act, but they opted in before seeing what the finished product would be.

Senators Rand Paul, Ted Cruz, Ron Johnson and Mike Lee said they opposed the current version—and they're not alone.

"Calling #Trumpcare a #HealthcareBill is absurd," House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi tweeted. "It’s nothing more than a massive tax cut for the rich on the backs of working families."

Dozens of disable activist stormed the Capitol today, some in wheelchairs and oxygen masks—at least 50 of them were arrested outside Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell's office.

The plan has many severe consequences for the LGBT community—especially the hit to Planned Parenthood. In more isolated areas PP is the only place to get HIV tests, Pap smears and other services without facing harassment or discrimination.

And Planned Parenthood is one of the largest providers of trans-related healthcare in the U.S, offering hormones and competent sexual health exams for trans patients.

"By eviscerating Medicaid, this bill threatens the liberty of people with disabilities, who will be forced to live in nursing homes and institutions instead of their own homes," ACLU National Political Director Faiz Shakir said in a statement.

"By defunding Planned Parenthood, this bill threatens the health of 2.5 million women and men in our country, many of whom rely on the health centers as their only source of care. And by throwing tens of millions of people off their insurance, this bill disproportionately impacts communities of color who will lose access to care and coverage."

It would also carve out loopholes allowing states to drop or lessen coverage of maternity care, prescriptions drugs, and mental health and substance abuse services.

The Twitterverse erupted with anger, frustration and not a small amount of shade over the #HealthcareBill

Oddly, the only person not discussing the health care bill is Donald Trump, who spent this afternoon tweeting about the 2016 election and denying he taped conversations with former FBI director James Comey.

The Senate version of the bill has very tight margin for success: McConnell can only lose two Republican votes and still pass it. If there's EVER been a reason to call your representative, this is it. Especially if you live in a red state. Call 202-224-3121.

Don't wait until it's too late.
