Serena Ryder's "Stompa" Could Be Summer's Hottest Song

If you read the title of this post, you might be thinking, "Summer song? What the hell is wrong with you, Blankenship?!? We're trapped in an endless winter! It's below freezing in Minneapolis, Los Angeles is barely in the 70s, and everyone on your Facebook feed is complaining about having towear scarves."

Well, yes, that's true (though I'm not sure how you got access to my Facebook feed).

But that's besides the point. I still found the perfect summer jam. If we start listening to it now, we'll be fully prepped when it's time to race to the beach and we need something to blast from our Jeeps.

Serena Ryder's "Stompa" is a sickening blues-rock jam that will make you twerk that booty and pop those hips. It's going to make your day sexier, and when the weather warms up, you'll want it bumping at your pool party.

If you listen to the lyrics, you'll notice that Serena Ryder wants you to chill out and dance:

People working every night and day.

Never give yourself no time.

Got too many bills to pay.

Slow down—nothing’s gonna disappear

If you give yourself some room to move to the music you hear.

I mean... right? Let's forget about our jobs for a minute and just clappa our hands and stompa our feet. That's a very summery attitude.

If you live in Canada, where Serena Ryder is from, it's possible you've been grooving to "Stompa" for months, since it was a top ten hit in the provinces last fall. The song has slowly been making inroads on American radio stations since February, and I just discovered it last week digging around iTunes for new hits. It got my attention right away.

I'm even more excited by this song because the rest of Ryder's music is just as appealing. She's got a Brandi Carlile, roots-rock vibe, but with a little of Coldplay's grandeur thrown in. If that sounds good to you, then should also check out "What I Wouldn't Do," a rousing mid-tempo anthem from her album Harmony.

Based on what I've heard of her full album, Harmony, (which drops July 16), Serena Ryder could carry me through the summer and well into fall.

Mark Blankenship likes Serena Ryder enough to accept that "stompa" is a valid word. He tweets as @IAmBlankenship.
