The "Sex And The City" Opening Credits You Never Saw

No tutu?!

Fact: The opening credits of Sex and the City are iconic.

The music, the actress' names against New York landmarks, Carrie Bradshaw (Sarah Jessica Parker) getting splashed by a bus while wearing a questionable outfit involving a tutu.

But viewers almost never saw that fashion forward outfit.

“There were two wardrobes. One was the tutu, and we did one pass where Sarah Jessica was wearing a blue dress and didn’t get splashed; instead, she trips when she sees the ad,” creator Darren Star reveals in the newest issue of Entertainment Weekly. “In my mind, it was a nod to The Dick Van Dyke Show, but we didn’t use it. It’s in the archives.”

Now for the first time since the opening was shot almost 20 years ago, fans are getting a sneak peek of the scene that was left on the cutting room floor.

“It was very difficult for the producers to understand the tutu,” said costume designer Patricia Field. “Sarah Jessica and I were fighting for it, and Darren said, ‘Okay, but I want other outfits as possibilities.'”

“It was such a brilliant choice because, in a way, Carrie’s dancing through her life in New York,” Starr added.

Parker never actually wore the tutu in the series and it only resurfaced in a scene in the 2008 movie when Carrie is cleaning out her closet after she decides to move in with Big (Chris Noth).

“I felt like I was pushing doing something I shouldn’t be doing,” Parker said, reflecting back on the filming of the opening credits. “Like, don’t put that on, you know? It was on very quick, and then it was off.”
