"Sexy 'Hamilton'" Javier Munoz Discusses His Road To Success On "The Late Show"

"I had to surrender to my own humanity."

Javier Munoz, the man who replaced Lin Manuel Miranda in the wildly successful Broadway show Hamilton last month, had a charming chat with Stephen Colbert on The Late Show Thursday night.

Munoz, who is openly gay, HIV-positive, and a cancer survivor, discussed being dubbed "the sexy Hamilton" by the press, what it was like performing for the Obamas, how he influenced Miranda's original role in the 2008 Broadway musical In the Heights, and how his personal health has affected his journey.

Asked what he was able to bring to the development of the starring roll in Hamilton, Munoz said: "The root of the drive is rooted in my own personal experience — specifically for me, the fear of dying."

"I had to surrender to my own humanity," he said of taking two months off from the show to receive radiation therapy. "What the show became for me at that point was one of the reasons I was fighting to stay alive. I wanted it."
