YouTube personality Shane Dawson, who has more than 6.7 million subscribers on his channel, came out as bisexual today in a tearful video confessional.
“Over the last year I have been extremely sexually confused,” he explains. “I mean my whole life, but this last year is when it really hit me.”
Dawson, 26, adds that he always wished he was “just 100% gay.”
Number One, that would mean I knew who I was. Number Two, it would be a lot easier for me to be accepted by people. Because I wear wigs and dresses on the internet and I’m feminine and all these things.
And it would be so much easier to just say, ’Yeah, you know, I’m gay.’ But I’m not completely gay, and I can’t sit here and say that I am. But I also can’t sit here and say that I’m straight [either].
I’ve come to the conclusion, through therapy and through being honest with myself, I am bisexual.”
Is it really easier being gay, though? Can you compare different people’s journeys? Regardless, we’re glad Shane has found the confidence to be open about who he is.
He now ranks as perhaps the biggest LGBT personality on YouTube: While Tyler Oakley has more subscribers (7.1 million), Dawson’s videos on ShaneDawsonTV have been watched more than one billion times, compared to Oakley’s 429 million.
Not that it’s a competition or anything.
