Shangela Plays Peacemaker After Gay-Bar Owner Caught Using N-Word

"I’m here to make it right."

Last week, Darryl DePiano, the owner of Philadelphia's ICandy, was caught on video repeatedly using the n-word in a racist rant about drink tickets.

The bar issued an apology online, but when Drag Race star Shangela visited ICandy this week, she brought DePiano on stage to address the issue and "make it right."

"Some of you may be like, 'Shangela, why are you here?... Are you condoning behavior? Are you supporting it?'" she told the crowd. "I did not appreciate or support it, but let me tell you something, baby: Opportunities come for change. And tonight we are standing on an opportunity of change."

She then called on DePiano to join her on stage for an in-person apology.

"That’s really not who I am or what I stand for," he said. "I have to take full responsibility for my really poor actions and really disgusting language that I used."

“I’m not going to run away," he added. "I’m going to stand up, take my lickings and hope that we can all make a change, mostly myself, and help the entire community change as one for equality."

But as Shangela pointed out after his speech ended, "statements are one thing, actions are another."

She revealed that DePiano and his staff will be going through sensitivity and diversity training, and should be held accountable by customers and the community.
