Watch Shangela Gag the Spirit Awards With a Surprise Musical Number

"I came. I saw. I ate chicken nuggets during my number."

Halleloo! A star is reborn!

RuPaul’s Drag Race all-star Shangela, who memorably appeared in A Star Is Born, gooped the crowd Saturday at the 2019 Film Independent Spirit Awards, which aired on IFC.

The bit was that subversive filmmaker John Waters had taken over the control room and told host Aubrey Plaza that he’d decided to replace another boring speech with a big musical number.

Enter Shangela, the “black drag queen version of Aubrey Plaza,” to celebrate the nominees for “Best Original Songs That Are Not Actually Even in These Films.”

Think shirtless backup dancers, chicken nuggets with sauce, a death drop, and Joaquin Phoenix gagged speechless.

Forget “Shallow,” honey. This musical medley included fake club songs from If Beale Street Could Talk, Eighth Grade, Leave No TraceYou Were Never Really Here, and First Reformed.

If Beale Street Could Talk, what would she say?” Shangela sang. ’Step aside, bitch, I’ve the right of way.’”

But don’t come for Shangela for flubbing her words a smidge. As she later tweeted, thanking Plaza for the invitation, she’d only gotten the track the day before and pulled together the choreography that morning.

Fun fact: Shangela was accompanied at the Santa Monica ceremony by her friend and assistant, gay porn star Liam Riley.
