Sharice Davids Wins Kansas House Race

She has made history as the first Native American woman, and the first openly LGBTQ person from the state, to be elected to Congress.

Sharice Davids has won the race for Kansas' 3rd congressional district against incumbent Republican Rep. Kevin Yoder, making history.

Davids is the first openly LGBTQ person elected to Congress from Kansas, the first Native American woman and the first lesbian Native American individual elected to Congress. Yoder had represented the district since 2011.

"I keep saying how surprised I am that we’re in 2018, and we’re still having all these firsts," she said in a video interview for the web series Wassaja.

Davids has claimed 9% more votes than Yoder at time of writing, with 89% of precincts reporting.

While Kansas went for President Trump in the 2016 election, Yoder's district narrowly voted for Hillary Clinton. The win is key for Democrats, who are hoping to win the House, and appear to be on track.

The LGBTQ community is celebrating her victory.
