“Call me he, call me she, call me Regis and Kathie Lee. Just call me. And book me,” said Sharon Needles, riffing on an old quote from RuPaul this weekend at South by Southwest.  During a panel called "The Nonconformists" our three favorite punk icons — Miss Needles, Laura Jane Grace of the band Against Me!, and Big Freedia — sat down for a quick kiki with former MTV host  John Norris, who sported a fashionable Jason Collins jersey.

The three discussed everything from trans issues to music writing. Most talked about was the writing process for Against Me!'s latest album, Transgender Dysphoria Blues, an important documentation of Laura Jane Grace's transition:

I started touring with my band in 2000 and we’ve played 200-plus shows a year since then. ... All of a sudden I’m 30 years old, and I don’t know who the fuck I am. Life happened quick ... I was writing to save my life. I was just trying to not kill myself.

Big Freedia also discussed overcoming adversity during the session:

When I started my journey, I set out to change people’s minds in New Orleans about queens, and I did that ... We had people like Bobby Marchan and Little Richard that performed before our time and opened the doors for our community.

But when me and Katey Red jumped in the game in 1998, Katey was the first transexual male to come out with bounce music in New Orleans, and people were not ready for it. We stood firm on who we were and look where we are now.

Not discussed during the panel was what a collaboration between these three superstars would sound like.  Could you even imagine?
