She Saved The Receipts And Took Down Alabama's Anti-LGBT Governor

After Gov. Robert Bentley paraded his affair in front of her, Dianne Bentley said "Enough."

On Monday, Alabama Governor Robert Bentley finally resigned rather than face impeachment proceedings after his affair with a female aide came to light. While in office Bentley was a vocal opponent of LGBT rights, calling same-sex marriage “a social experiment” and encouraging judges to ignore Obergefell v. Hodges.

And we can thank his ex-wife, Dianne Bentley, for his takedown.

Back in 2013 Dianne became suspicious her husband was cheating on her with advisor Rebekah Mason, who was living at the Governor's mansion pool house. Dianne noticed Mason texting the governor an awful lot during off-hours and about non-governmental business.

In February 2014, the Bentleys attended a National Governor's Association event in Washington, D.C. and Mason came along. She and Bentley spent the night texting flirtatiously at the table. "I can't take my eyes off of you," Gov. Bentley texted Mason, in full view of his wife.

A few months later, Dianne placed a tape recorder inside her purse and told her husband she was going for a walk. When she returned, she discovered he'd called Mason a minute after she left the room, and declared his love for her.

According to Business Insider, Bentley believed his opponent in the 2014 governor's race had a copy of the tape and he sent Alabama Law Enforcement Secretary Spencer Collier to retrieve it.

But he didn't stop the affair, or try to be more discreet: In one slip-up, he accidentally texted "I love you Rebekah" to his wife.

Bentley had also given Dianne his work iPad, unaware it was synced to his work iPhone. His wife of 50 years received copies of all the texts between the governor and Mason.

Messages like:

"You look beautiful and feel so soft."

"Bless our hearts. And other parts."

"You are wonderful my sweet love."

"I love you, Rebekah ?? "

Dianne might have been used to turning a blind eye, but enough was enough. She took screenshots of everything, and filed for divorce in 2015. The following year, she gave the ethics committee pages and pages of phone logs and text messages to assist in their investigation.

After the Supreme Court brought marriage equality to all 50 states, Gov. Bentley, a former Baptist deacon, declared "I have always believed in the Biblical definition of marriage."

So it's fitting his wife went Old Testament on him when he betrayed her.
