The Simpsons co-creator Sam Simon has given Benjy, the Irish bull who was destined for the slaughterhouse because it was gay, a last-minute pardon: He's donated the money to have the sassy steer sent to an animal sanctuary.

TheGayUK kicked off a crowdsourcing campaign for Benjy and raised about 4,000 pounds ($6,200). Simon, who is facing a terminal cancer diagnosis and has been donating his fortune to charity causes, stepped in and donated the remaining  5,000 quid necessary to have the bull moved to the Hillside Animal Sanctuary in England.

"All animals have a dire destiny in the meat trade, but to kill this bull because he's gay would've been a double tragedy," Simon said.
