Singer Greg Holden Releases Touching Gay-Themed "Boys In The Street" Video

UK singer/songwriter Greg Holden just released the music video for his single "Boys in the Street," a coming of age tale about a gay man's relationship with his disapproving father over the years.

"When I was young, my daddy told me I would never amount to nothing special," Holden sings. "He'd say, 'You're the last thing I wanted, the last thing I need."

(Off to a cheery start.)

The video shows two mannequins, one the father, the other the son, engaged in a heated dinner table discussion.

The song goes onto to touch on the embarrassment this man's father felt when other dads would tell them they saw his son "kissing boys in the street."

"Stop kissing boys in the street," the father repeats.

Fortunately, as time goes on his "daddy's heart is a little warmer," but he "still won't hug me like my brother, still won't kiss me like my mother."

(The tears are welling, y'all.)

It's not until the father is dying of an unspecified illness that he has a come to Jesus moment that his son "wasn't lying" about his sexuality, and then instructs him to "keep kissing boys in the streets."

In an interview with Yahoo at this year's SXSW, Holden said this song was partly inspired by his relationship with his own stepfather, but mostly inspired by the experiences of his friends. "I wanted to try and write about it, because a lot of them can’t," Holden explained.

The song was originally recorded for the charity compilation, "Everyone is Gay."
