Six-Year-Old Trans Girl Fights For Rights In Documentary "Growing Up Coy"

"When she started asking us, you know, when are we gonna get the doctors to cut her penis off, that was when it became a problem."

Long before transgender bathroom rights were creating the national frenzy that they are today, a Colorado family was thrust into the spotlight to fight for the rights of their young trans daughter.

The new documentary "Growing Up Coy" shares the story of the Mathis family and their 6-year-old transgender child, Coy, after they brought a civil rights discrimination case against her school district in 2013.

The family shared that, after a new principal told Coy she was no longer allowed to use the girls' bathroom at school, they fought for her rights and ended up winning the landmark case.

The film, directed by Eric Juhola and produced by Jeremy Stulberg, will have its world premiere at the Human Rights Watch Film Festival in New York on June 16 and 17, and will debut on the West Coast at Frameline40 at the Castro Theater on June 25.
