NEW VIDEO: Spielberg Tackles Broadway

Move over Glee, there’s a new musical program hitting the small screen. NBC released an extended preview of Smash, a new TV drama premiering February 6 at 10PM.

We never thought we’d hear Broadway and Steven Spielberg in the same sentence but the Hollywood icon is executive producing the series. Smash is an hour-long musical drama centering on what goes on behind-the-scenes of a Broadway production. It’s Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip -- oh how we miss that show -- meets Broadway. "I've had this idea for quite a few years," Spielberg reveals in the preview. "I'm really interested in what happens backstage.”

Debra Messing and Christian Borle play the co-writing team who come up with the idea for a musical about Marilyn Monroe. American Idol’s Katharine McPhee and a full-figured blonde (if she’s not Michelle Williams we don’t know if we can watch her) compete for the play’s musical role of Marilyn. Anjelica Huston plays the producer of the Broadway show, and the TV series has its own talented producers and directors from Chicago, Hairspray and Spring Awakening.

In the series, Katharine seems to be the lead. She plays Karen Cartwright, an aspiring actress from Iowa (only someone from Iowa would be named Karen). Karen has a motivational, supportive boyfriend with whom she will likely have a fully functioning relationship that won’t at all be put into jeopardy with any co-stars or choreographers or directors. Riiight.

Messing is a huge fan of Katharine’s work, “To say that she has a gift would be an understatement.” While we aren’t sure if we agree with the overplayed Christina Aguilera soundtrack, the show definitely looks promising.

But then again, we loved Center Stage.
