Smithers Finally Comes Out As Gay On “The Simpsons”

The show will dedicate two episodes to his journey of self-acceptance.

The producers of the long-running cartoon comedy The Simpsons have revealed that Mr. Burns’ assistant, Smithers, will finally come out of the closet on the upcoming 27th season.

Although the audience, and most other characters, have known for years, his boss certainly does not.

And that’s why a big part of Smithers’ journey to self-acceptance will include him reviewing his unrequited love for Mr. Burns.

“We deal with that in two episodes,” said executive producer Al Jean. “We actually do a lot with Smithers this year; he gets fed up with Burns not appreciating him and considers his options.”

The last time The Simpsons had a character come out of the closet was 2004, when Marge’s sister Patty revealed she was a lesbian.
