TLC's "My Husband's Not Gay"- No Petition Needed

It's a network's free publicity dream! Nearly 100,000 people have signed an online petition in outrage over a TV show-- a documentary special called My Husband's Not Gay! about Mormon men who freely admit they are attracted to other men - but who are nonetheless married and living heterosexual lives.

The people up in arms over the show are concerned that it "promotes the false and dangerous idea that gay people can and should choose to be straight in order to be part of their faith communities."

Personally, I get a little suspicious whenever people describe an idea as "dangerous." I figure it's better to let as much sunlight in as possible in our civic discourse-- and after a full airing let the court of public opinion figure out which ideas have merit and which ones are shite.

Coming at it from that perspective, I have absolutely no problem with TLC's My Husband's Not Gay. See, I think these gay/same-sex attracted/homosexual (take your adjective pick) Mormon husbands are misguided, but if that's the life they want to lead then more power to 'em. They're no crazier than Civil War re-enacters in my book.

I also think the people signing the petition might just have it backwards. TLC's show might actually dispel "the false and dangerous idea that gay people can and should choose to be straight in order to be part of their faith communities." Why do I think this? Well just check out this preview clip, exclusively for TheBacklot readers, which shows the Mormon husbands engaged in a friendly discussion with some openly gay men. Each side politely questions the other's life choices and... it's pretty clear which side wins the debate.

See, no petition needed. Even on TLC's My Husband's Not Gay there are positive gay role models to be had.

My Husband's Not Gay airs on TLC this Sunday at 10/9c on TLC
