Columbia Pictures Filming Chinese Remake Of "My Best Friend's Wedding"

A day after we reported Pretty Woman was being remade into a Broadway musical comes word another Julia Roberts vehicle, My Best Friend's Wedding, is being resurrected in a somewhat different way: Columbia Pictures, which owns the rights to the 1997 rom-com, is remaking Wedding in Chinese to sate the growing Asian film market.

Chinese-language films, as opposed to dubbed movies, account for six of the ten top grossing films in China,  encouraged American studios to take a new tact. Columbia, Disney and other major U.S. studios have all partnered with Chinese filmmakers and production companies to make native-language movies.

Columbia has already planned on three films: In addition to the aforementioned Wedding, there's The Monk, a martial-arts movie, and the romance Summer Has Tears. New Classics Media will distribute Monk for Columbia, and work on the Wedding revamp, scheduled to begin production in December 2014.

The original My Best Friend's Wedding featured a breakout performance by Rupert Everett as Roberts' gay confidant, George. Given China's conservative attitudes toward homosexuality, will the gay-best-friend role get lost in translation?
