Sophia Petrillo's Five Most Monstrous Moments

EVIL PERSONIFIED

The Golden Girls (now on Logotv) is one of the most beloved sitcoms in TV history, and for good reason. In its depiction of four older single women living together in Miami, it gave voice to a neglected segment of the population-- and does so with warmth, humor, and a little bit of insanity. Plus it was way ahead of its time.

All of the characters inhabit a particular type, i.e Dorothy is the Carrie, Blanche is the Samantha, Rose is the Charlotte, and of course, Sophia is the Miranda Anthony.

It's Sophia we need to discuss.

Moving in with the already established trio of daughter Dorothy, Blanche, and Rose after a suspicious fire at her retirement home Shady Pines, Sophia was a seemingly benign grandmother whose caustic one-liners and inner venom were used to decimate the self-esteem of her daughter, and annihilate anyone who dared to vibrate a strand in her web.

On the plus side, her fashion sense has been appropriated by Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen

Here are a few examples of Sophia at her most monstrous. It's time to face the truth.

Oh, and you're probably arguing "But Sophia had a stroke that destroyed the part of her brain that censors what she says." Nice try, however ... when they do flashbacks to her early years in Brooklyn ... she's the exact same way!

SHE MOCKS FAT PEOPLE ... TO THEIR FACE

When Blanche's daughter comes to visit after many years away, Sophia answers the door, something she should never, ever be allowed to do. Her hatred of fat people would again rear its ugly head when Blanche's wannabe old flame Ham pays a visit, noticeably heavier. Sophia would refer to him as "Ham And Potatoes"

SHE ABUSES CHILDREN

When Blanche's young grandson comes for an extended stay, a simple misunderstanding about curfews and visitors would lead to a shocking act of violence. It's a wonder that Dorothy only emerged from her hellish childhood with emotional bruises.

SHE HATES HER DAUGHTER

Sophia spent seven seasons making her daughter feel worthless, and in this scene, she actually votes to have her removed from the house. Is it any wonder that Dorothy kept a sock drawer full of nursing home brochures, and was "Just waiting for the first sign of dribble on her chin to lock her away?"

SHE BODY SHAMES BLANCHE

When Sophia and Blanche begin dating the same man, Sophia cruelly uses Blanche's physical imperfections against her. It would become a regular occurrence.

SHE WAS A CULT LEADER

The security footage above has been suppressed for decades, and can only now finally be revealed to the world. It shows Sophia as the leader of the cult that ruled Shady Pines, where bizarre hand rituals were a required part of daily life. Her reign of terror at the retirement home ended after an incident with a hotplate and sacrificial s'mores, which set the home ablaze and forced Sophia to intrude on her daughter's life.
