South African Soap Opera Airs First Gay Kiss

"7de Laan" fans are wondering why the series waited so long to feature a gay couple.

A long-running South African soap opera just aired a same-sex kiss for the first time.

7de Laan is about to hit 4,000 episodes since premiering 17 years ago, but the surprise kiss between two of its male characters was still a first in the soap's history.

The scene featured two waitresses crushing on the character of Logan (Simon Tuit) who find out—along with the audience—that he's actually gay after seeing him kiss his husband, Divan (Arnu de Villiers), Unicorn Booty explains.

You can watch the full scene starting at the 14:15 mark below.

Although this isn't the first same-sex kiss to ever be featured on a South African soap opera, the visibility is still extremely important. Despite South Africa being the first country in the world to constitutionally prohibit discrimination based on sexual orientation, its LGBT community is still consistently plagued with violence and hate crimes.
