Spending Saturday with Johnny Weir: He Skates, He Shocks, He Sings - Welcome to His World!

He's probably the only person enjoying the incessant and brutally icy winds of winter when it's supposed to be spring. But why not? Johnny Weir works winter beautifully in his damn fur coats. Everyone knows the figure skating fashionista is excessive and gorgeous but if you think that's how he defines himself, then you haven't read his book, 'Welcome to My World.' (Hey, it's Saturday and the book's been out since January, so get on that!)

But if you're clueless, here are the (not so) big surprises...the not-always-a-good-boy Johnny Weir decided to be good to gays who appreciate this kind of thing, by writing in his book that he is gay. For years the outspoken ice skating star never made a comment on his sexuality, frustrating gay press and activists.

But as always he has an answer for everything, he was never in the closet he was just Weir:

My being gay is the smallest part of what makes me me. Yes, I have some stereotypical gay traits (I love flowers, fashion and I’m an ice skater for Christ’s sake). But I also have traits stereotypical of a Jewish mother (I’ll feed anyone I can get my hands on) and a regular ol’ rural male (I’m not afraid to get my hands dirty). The massive backlash against me in the gay community only made me dig my “closeted” heels in further.”

So he's out, along with possible explanations for his crazy behaviors, scandalous stories, his first kiss with a boy at 16 and the confession to his teary-eyed mother that he was gay.

From the book:

"Mom, adult to adult, I need to tell you something. I’m gay.” Suddenly it felt like I was sitting in the room with a stranger, and this was my mom, my best friend. She started to cry. I wasn’t angry. No mother wants to hear her son say he’s gay. Those two words rip the picture of a daughter-in-law and grandchildren into pieces. I felt sorry for my mom and wanted her to know everything was going to be all right.

“I really don’t care Johnny, as long as I know that you are happy,” she said.

Suddenly I felt this great freedom. It’s not an issue for the rest of my family and they don’t ask any questions which I consider a blessing.

The more fun tid bits in this tell-all-tale are Weir's encounters with his idols. Among them is Mz. Sex and the City herself, obvi.

A fan of Sex and the City since the show started, I have always wanted to be Carrie Bradshaw. The character informed a lot of my youth and fashion daring; she inspired me to be a New York–style single lady.

She held out her hand to me and said, “I’m Sarah Jessica.”

“Of course you are,” I said, awestruck. “I’m Johnny Weir.”

“I know exactly who you are,” she said with a Bradshawesque glimmer in her eye.

Get inside the world of Johnny Weir, it sounds like a page turner!

We know Carrie loves sparkles, but it's likely Johnny loves them more

Along with a book, Johnny's recorded a single 'Dirty Love.' And surprise, he also choreographed a skating routine to go with it that he performed on The Today Show. Sparkles and skates, Johnny ya done good.
