"Splatoon 2" Players Rise Up Against Transphobia In A Beautiful Moment

"This is just a really positive and loving community."

Video game communities may not be known for spreading messages of love and positivity, but players of Splatoon 2 have been breaking the mold by flooding the game with LGBT pride.

The game allows you to change your avatar's gender at any time, which Mashable pointed out makes the inklings gender-fluid by definition.

As a few players began vocally celebrating this fact, a few spouted some predictable transphobic jokes as well.

"If I had a dime for every gender, I'd have 20 cents," one player wrote in an attempt to bring bigoted politics into a children's game.

But players who stand in solidarity with LGBT gamers were much, much louder. The game was flooded with posts by people declaring that LGBT squids are "fresh as hell" and a sea of other pro-queer comments. So much so, that the posts of pride started becoming memes.

"This level of positivity is super rare in video games and game communities...or anywhere, really," wrote a player on Reddit. "I can't think of many communities where being nice to each other could become a meme for a few days. This is just a really positive and loving community, and folks want to share that positivity."

Other commenters on the thread pointed out that the posts of love and positivity will be vital to kids who may be struggling with their sexuality or gender identity, which means playing Splatoon 2 could actually save lives.
