J.J. Abrams Confirms: There Will Be Gay Characters In "Star Wars"

"To me, the fun of 'Star Wars' is the glory of possibility."

J.J. Abrams has confirmed there will be gay characters in upcoming installments of Star Wars.

At a pre-Oscars event in L.A., the Force Awakens director Abrams said he wants the Star Wars universe to be more inclusive.

"To me, the fun of Star Wars is the glory of possibility," Abrams said, according to The Daily Beast.

"So it seems insanely narrow-minded and counterintuitive to say there wouldn't be a homosexual character in that world."

LGBT characters have already appeared in other Star Wars novels, including lesbian Moff Mars in Lord of the Siths and gay protagonist Sinjir Rath Velus in Aftermath.

In the book, Velus is an Imperial officer who joins the Rebellion after witnessing a gruesome battle on Endor. (That's not altogether different origin than Force Awakens' Finn, whom many have romantically linked to Rebel fighter Poe. )

In the video game world, Electronic Arts added same-sex relationships and story lines to the popular RPG Star Wars: The Old Republic.

The eighth Star Wars movie hit theaters on December 15, 2017.
