"Star Wars" Introduces First Canonical Gay Character

The character, whose name is Moff Mars (you can go ahead and make a clever pun about muffs but I'll skip that), is being described as:

...An Imperial who has made some very serious mistakes [... She is] an incredibly capable leader and spends much of the book working hard to prevent absolute failure.

It will certainly be interesting to see how the character's sexuality effects the story and her involvement with a nefarious totalitarian dictatorship.

The book's editor, Shelley Shapiro, had some thoughts on diversity in relation to the character:

This is certainly the first [LGBT] character in canon ... It's not something I really think about, it just makes sense. There's a lot of diversity–there should be diversity in Star Wars. You have all these different species and it would be silly to not also recognize that there's a lot of diversity in humans. If there's any message at all, it's simply that Star Wars is as diverse (or more so because they have alien species) as humanity is in real life and we don't want to pretend it's not. It just felt perfectly natural.

I mean, yeah! Fair enough!

More finicky Star Wars cultists will remember a way-too-subtle reference to a gay Mandalorian couple in some obscure literature, but many are already praising the introduction of Ms. Mars as a victory for it's openness and frankness.

Lords of the Sith will be released on April 28th. Until then, feel free to make as many obvious gay jokes about C3PO and R2D2 as you want.
