"Star Wars" Villain, Captain Phasma, Nearly Cast As A Man, Will Appear In "Episode VIII"

Gwendoline Christie kills in chrome.

Mystery surrounds chrome-plated Captain Phasma, one of the major villains of Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

Her role in the evil First Order, her origin, and her motives have all been kept a well-guarded secret in the lead-up to the film’s December 17 release. But while details on her fictional history are sparse, the character’s real-life development has gotten plenty of attention.

Vulture reports that J.J. Abrams and co-writer Lawrence Kasdan originally planned to cast the character as a man, before flipping genders on the shiny new baddie — news that actually surprised Phasma actress Gwendoline Christie.

But the Games of Thrones and Hunger Games star was happy to hear that the film’s team actively considered adding more women to the galaxy — especially in a way that the franchise hasn't yet seen.

“It’s that we’re so used to relating to female characters primarily through how they have been made in flesh,” she told Vulture. “And with Captain Phasma, our initial relationship is based on her character and her actions, rather than that random group of elements that comes together and makes us be born in a certain way.”

The actress and model is no stranger to bending gender roles on screen. In Game of Thrones, she embodies the imposing, yet loyal Brienne of Tarth — a brilliant knight and fighter in a fantasy world that has a tense track record when it comes to developing female characters.

For Force Awakens, Christie loves how gender neutral her shiny signature costume is.

“It’s armor, and it’s entirely functional, and it isn’t sexualized in any way,” she told Vulture. “I mean, in my own small bubble, this represents the way I think and the way I see things, but it’s not always the way of the world.”

Christie better get comfortable in her gender-bending garb. Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy revealed to the LA Times that Captain Phasma will survive Force Awakens to appear again in Episode VIII.

Looks like the galaxy far, far away is about to catch up to the present.
