Stephanie Beatriz is proving that sometimes fiction does reflect reality.
The Brooklyn Nine-Nine actress recently came out as bisexual, and her roles are mirroring the importance of representation. In an adorable video posted to her Instagram account, Beatriz announced she will be a guest star on the upcoming third season of the Netflix show, One Day at a Time.
The short video she posted on social media was shot on the series’ set with Beatriz revealing herself using Lydia’s (Rita Moreno) iconic curtain.
According to TVLine, Beatriz will be playing “Penelope’s cousin Pilar, whom Elena (Isabella Gomez) is convinced is gay”. Beatriz’s Brooklyn Nine-Nine co-star Melissa Fumero will also have a guest role on the third season. This development follows news that Gloria Estefan will be joining the cast as Mirtha, Lydia’s younger sister and arch-nemesis.
One Day at a Time captured a strong fan following after it premiered on Netflix back in 2017. A modernized version of Norman Lear’s 1975 hit show, the sitcom centers on a single mother raising her two children with her own mother. The show has tackled mental health, Latinx identity, blended families, and queerness with eldest daughter Elena’s heartfelt coming out during the first season.
The third season will premiere on the streaming service in 2019.
